HESSIAN PRISONERS OF WAR An excellent document chronicling the fate of the German troops that surrendered alongside Burgoyne at Saratoga in October 1777, manuscript D.S. 1p. oblong 4to. Fredrick Town, [Md.] July 20, 1782, "A Gen[era]l. Return of all the Prisoners at the Post of Frederick Town..." listing the prisoners of war by regiment and then by rank. The regiments were listed in a transliterated fashion: "De Voit's", "De Seyboth's", "Prince [illeg.]", "De Bose", and "Yaugirs" as well as "part of Several Regts of British". This appears to be the balance of officers and men (totaling 1,220) left at Frederick Town after the large body of the Convention Army (primarily the British contingent) had been moved north to Lancaster, Pennsylvania following Cornwallis' entry into Virginia in the summer of 1781. It was likely feared that many of these men were hired out from time to time, working in mines and farms. At the bottom, a note reads "80 prisoners out on Bond at M. Bayly...this post - per order of Col. Thomas". Margin torn at bottom, usual folds, else very good.
Estimate $ 600-800
