HERBERT HOOVER'S LAST BIRTHDAY SPEECH...AND CAKE!An interesting pair of relics from the later years of Hoover's life, includes an acetate reel-to-reel audio tape of Hoover's dedication speech for the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum on Aug. 10, 1962. The recording is paired with an oddball and possibly unique relic, labeled in ballpoint pen as "Pres Hoover's 88th Birthday Cake", and housed in a blue paper air sickness bag! As the bag is not very thick, we have to assume the cake has collapsed in the ensuing near half-century! The dedication ceremony on Aug. 10, 1962 was held two years before Hoover's death, and was the scene of his last public speech which read, in part: "...When the members of the Congress created these Presidential Libraries they did a great public service. They made available for research the records of vital periods in American history-and they planted these records in the countryside instead of allowing their concentration on the seaboard. Already the three libraries of President Roosevelt, President Truman, and President Eisenhower, by their unique documentation, serve this purpose, and today we dedicate a fourth-my own. Within them are thrilling records of supreme action by the American people, their devotion and sacrifice to their ideals. Santayana rightly said: 'Those who do not remember the past are condemned to relive it'. These institutions are the repositories of such experience-hot off the griddle...". The audio tape appears to have been very seldom played, while the bag bears some soiling from the contents within, else very good condition. Together, two pieces.
