HENRY W. MORRISCivil War Naval officer, Commodore of the steam sloop Pensacola, killed in 1863. Rare, fine content A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., Washington, Aug. 26, 1861, to Sec. of the Navy Gideon Welles, in part: "...I have the honor to enclose, herewith, the application of Mr. John C. Bunner, to be appointed an Acting Lieutenant or, and Acting Master...in the Navy to serve during the War. I have known Mr. Bunner very intimately during my early life. I was in the 'Ontario' where we served together as Midshipmen in the Mediterranean...1822 to 1824. His conduct was excellent...He afterward served on the frigates 'Constitution' & 'Brandywine", under the late Commodore Jacob Jones...". More. Central fold tear, mounting traces to left margin, overall very good.
