HENRY DEARBORN (1751 - 1829) American military officer and Secretary of War, fought at Bunker Hill, in Arnold's Quebec expedition, at Wyoming Valley, and in the War of 1812 took Fort George and York with heavy losses. A.L.S. as Secretary of War, 2pp. 4to., Washington, Oct. 5, 1805 to his son Henry Alexander Dearborn (1783-1851), concerning personal affairs as well as the opening of the political season in Washington, remarking "...Mr. & Mrs. Mason and family are at our house,- the President [Jefferson], Mr. [Albert] Galtalin [sic] & Mr. [Robert] Smith have arrived. Mr. Madison is expected to morrow...". Dearborn's son was studying law under Judge Story in Salem, Massachusetts at the time and was courting one "Miss C." who his father advises was making "...very light of any contemplated connection with you, she says that her friends would never have consented to her connection with you. I hope you will care as little about her as she appears to about you...". More good content. Light folds, small tear at left margin, otherwise fine.
