Sale 38 Lot 164

HENRY CLARK CORBIN(1842 - 1906) American military officer, a Civil War brevetted brigadier general, detailed for duty as Secretary of the Sitting Bull Commission and friend of George Custer. An interesting lot of items, including eleven A.L.S.'s from 1874-1894, and a document signed Apr. 30, 1874, being a pay voucher for retroactive rank as Captain, 21st Infy. Texas. The A.L.S. include one from Headquarters, Ft. Brown, TX, in part: "...Sheridan, I would not care for. I would not like to hunt and dig...The fact is I am more than indifferent to any such measures for the good of the country. I am of the impression that Sherman's personal staff could do the whole work required...I've been asking of the new Colonel [George Custer], of course we are anxious and curious to know how we shall like him...and what he will think of us...". Another A.L.S., War Department, Oct. 17, 1894 reads, in part: "...There would not be much delay about [Civil War general George D.] Ruggles' appointment which means much to me...", obviously referring to his promotion to major general just prior to his retirement. Much more to offer for the avid researcher, overall very good condition.
Estimate $ 300-400
