Sale 38 Lot 269

(1806 - 1876) Confederate brigadier general and Governor of Virginia who sent John Brown to the gallows. He died never accepting amnesty. Fine content A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Richmond, Sep. 29, 1865 as a prisoner of war, in part: "...I have no autographs of either Mr. [Jefferson] Davis or of Senators Mason or Slidell which I can send you. I hereby furnish you my own...Henry A. Wise Brig. Genl. C.S.A. Prisoner of War on Parole". Ink lightened just a tad, else very good. A stubborn man, Wise received a presidential parole, but never accepted amnesty.
Estimate $ 400-600
