HANK WILLIAMS(1923 - 1953) American singer considered the father of contemporary country music. Hank Williams is the father of contemporary country music. By the age of 25, Williams had become a superstar and would write a body of songs that have become popular classics. His direct, emotional lyrics and vocals became the standard. The troubled and reckless lives he depicted in his music reflected his own life; by 29 he was dead from a combination of alcohol, medications, and overwork. Superb D.S. 1p. legal folio, [Nashville], Feb. 6, 1951, the royalty contract for one of Williams' best known songs, "Hey, Good Lookin'"! The document is made between Williams and his publisher Acuff-Rose Publications and stipulates that Williams will sell his rights to "Hey, Good Lookin'" and the flip-side song "Barking at the Moon" to Acuff-Rose in consideration of the payment of $1.00 plus three cents per copy of each sheet music sold, a quarter of a penny when the songs are included in folios, 50% of the royalties received in licensing mechanical reproduction and recording equipment, and 50% of foreign royalties. Boldly signed in bright blue ink by Williams at bottom. One fold, else very good. "Hey, Good Lookin'" was recorded on March 16, 1951 and sailed to the number one spot in the charts, and "Barking at the Moon" did almost as well. An important document for one of Hank's greatest songs, recorded at the height of his career.
Estimate $ 2,500-3,500
