Sale 38 Lot 338

HANDBILL OF THE DEAD AND WOUNDED OF THE 96TH ILLINOIS Rare handbill or small broadside, 9" x 3", [Galena, ca. 1863], a hurriedly-typeset list of members of the 96th Illinois killed and wounded at Chickamauga in September, 1863, along with the location of the wounds. The list is followed by the text of a letter sent by Major J. C. Smith claiming that: "...We whipped three divisions of the enemy and then ran out of ammunition and had to fall back...Many Galena boys laid down their lives; I cannot mention them...To-morrow we expect a repition of the battle, but hope Burnside may get up and save us...". Small clean tear at top, light foxing, else very good. Gaelna was, of course, the home of Ulysses S. Grant.
Estimate $ 300-400
