HAND-BOOK FOR ACTIVE SERVICE, FROM A 72ND OHIO CORPORAL An 1861 edition of Egbert L. Viele's Handbook for Active Service Containing Practical Instructions in Campaign for the Use of Volunteers (New York: D. Van Nostrand, 1861) 252pp. illus, 8vo. Bound in red gilt illustrated boards and gilt titled spine. Spine and boards rubbed affecting title, pages toned at extreme margins. Ownership signature on front pastedown and title page, "J J Snyder Springfield, Ohio" and "John J Snyder". Egbert Viele is best known today for his monumental survey of New York's Central Park that set the stage for Vaux and Olmstead's masterpiece.
