GUTZON BORGLUM(1871 - 1941) American sculptor and artists responsible for the sculpting of Mount Rushmore, as well as the commencement of the Confederate memorial at Stone Mountain. Important content A.L.S., 2pp., 8vo., Washington, [1936] to Marvin McIntyre, Franklin D. Roosevelt's personal secretary. Borglum discusses F.D.R.'s coming visit to the dedication of a part of the monument, in part: "...... I showed Mr. Oliphant the accompanying article......[I send] one enclosed for the president if you think he would be interested I wrote it really for the magazines. Did I acknowledge your letter re President's return from the Pacific? I turned your note over to Mr. Fred Sargent, President of the Mt. Rushmore Monument Commission who will of course make all the formal arrangements. I will however do as you ask me...... Please let me know before you start if he [the President] will dedicate the West Wall of Mt. Rushmore for the inscriptions. I have a lot to plan for, in order that everything will be in readiness. Address me Rapid City......". Very good. Thomas Jefferson's bust was dedicated in 1936 with Roosevelt attending the dedication. The President had no intention of speaking at the dedication but was inspired by what he saw, and gave a brief speech. He declared: "......I had no conception, until about ten minutes ago, not only of its magnitude, but also its permanent beauty and importance......and I think that we can perhaps meditate on those Americans of 10,000 years from now......meditate and wonder what our descendants and I think they will still be here and will think about us. Let us hope...... that they will believe we have honestly striven every day and every generation to preserve a decent land to live in and a decent form of government to operate under......". Staple hole at top right corner with minor folds slightly affecting signature, else very good.
Estimate $ 1,500-2,000
