GUSTAVUS W. SMITH(1821 - 1896) Confederate major general who served under Joe Johnston and assumed command of his army until succeeded on the field by Robert E. Lee, he later led Georgia militia forces in a defense against Sherman's March. War-date D.S., 1p. 4to., Goldsboro, Dec. 20, 1862, the signed retained copy of a telegram sent to Brig. Gen. William H. T. Whiting. In part: "...the lead of the enemy's column...[was] seventeen miles from Kinston on the road to Trenton [?]...My scouts are hanging upon their rear. I have no reason to suppose that any portion of their force is now on the RR line between here and Wilmington...If they go to Newbern, their future operations will most probably be towards Weldon, or Petersburg...". Very good.
