Sale 38 Lot 263

(1835 - 1884) Union major general who commanded a division at Port Hudson and a corps during the Petersburg and Appomattox campaigns. Fine content A.D.S. on an 8vo. sheet, Brazos Santiago, TX., July 6, 1865, in full: "Richmond was captured April 3rd 1865. G. Weitzel Maj. Genl. U.S. Vols.". A few letters brushed, light soiling, else very good. Weitzel took possession of the Confederacy's capital on April 3, 1865, establishing his headquarters in the home of Jefferson Davis. His aide, lieutenant Johnston de Peyster, is credited with raising the first Union flag over the city after its fall.
