GETTYSBURG POW ARCHIVEA interesting war-date lot of eight documents and forms from the personal archive of Medical Director Henry Janes related to the reporting of Confederate POWs on hand at Camp Letterman, Gettysburg written between August 21 through Dec. 2, 1863. The 1p. 4to., by acting Surgeon General Joseph R. Smith, Washington, D. C., Aug. 21, 1863 to Surg. William S. King, in part: "...You will instruct the Surgeons in charge of Hospitals at Gettysburg to forward...the rolls of Prisoners of War...thro this office...". Along with 1p. 4to., by Capt. Wilson Tweed Hartz, on "Office of Commissary General of Prisoners" letterhead, Washington, D. C., Aug. 21 to "Surg, in charge of U. S. Hosp'l. Gettysburg, Pa.", in part: "...I herewith enclose...a form for the monthly Return required to be furnished...from all stations where prisoners of war are held and request that hereafter the Returns forwarded by you may be made in accordance with it...". Third, an example enclosed for Hartz of a partly-printed oblong folio form filled out showing the return of both the military and political prisoners captured at Vicksburg. Fourth, a telegram from Commissioner of Prisoners Col. William Hoffman, Washington, Nov. 27, 1863 to Janes POW rolls. Fifth, the original manuscript copy of Janes' return telegram to Hoffman from Gettysburg, Nov. 28, 1863. Sixth, a manuscript 1p. 4to., letter by Janes, Gettysburg, Pa., Dec. 2, 1863 to Hoffman, in part: "I send today by Adams & Co's Express Rolls of the Prisoners of war left in the hospitals about Gettysburg after the battle of July 1st, 2nd, & 3rd...duplicate lists of all the prisoners sent off by me in the months of July...were furnished the Provost Marshall...". Finally, two blank oath of allegiance forms for prisoners who took the oath. Much more interesting content and a rare group. Very good to fine.
