GETTYSBURG LEGAL CLAIM FOR BATTLE DAMAGES A great war-date legal document 2pp folio, [Gettysburg, Pa.], Oct. 20, 1863, regarding the claim of John Slyder for damage to his farm. In the afternoon of July 2nd, Longstreet's Confederates tramped across the farm in their attack on Devil's Den and on the next day newly minted Union cavalry General Elon Farnsworth was killed, just south of the farm, in an ill-advised attack upon the Confederate flank. The claim reads, in part: "...At the time of the battle at Gettysburg his land laying south of the town was occupied by the Union army...on the afternoon of the Second July his house was occupied by Union soldiers and he was obliged to leave on account of the danger...[he] returned on Sunday July 5th and the soldiers were still in his house and his fencing, crops were destroyed...he has not received any compensation...". An inventory list indicates that from July 1 through July 6, seven acres wheat, two acres crop, one ton hay, 30 bushels of corn, fence rails, and land was destroyed. Following the epic battle of Gettysburg, many of the Union soldiers who fought were incensed upon learning that the farmers of lower Pennsylvania, including Gettysburg, filed claims against the federal government for property damage resulting from Lee's 1863 invasion. Signed by Slyder and witnessed by Justice of Peace Cover. Minor tape repair on verso, else very good.
Estimate $ 700-900
