Sale 38 Lot 1451

GEORGE GERSHWIN(1898 - 1937) American composer and songwriter in collaboration with his brother Ira, his works include "Porgy and Bess", "Rhapsody in Blue", and "An American in Paris". A superb Gershwin item, an abstract self-portrait in pencil, 4 1/4" x 6", drawn upon a telephone message sheet. Gershwin's characteristic smile, nose and eyes are evident, with his signature "George Gershwin" cut from a check matted beneath the drawing. Both are set in a period frame. According to our consignor, a noted East Coast dealer of classical music autographs, the two items were framed by Ira Gershwin and presented by him to George Gershwin's assistant and lover, Kay Swift. Swift was also American composer of popular and classical music, and was the first woman to score a complete musical. Fine.
