FRANKLIN PIERCEScarce D.S. "Franklin Pierce" as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, Oct. 2, 1855, a naval appointment of James L. Henderson to serve as "Commander in the Navy". Co-signed by Secretary of the Navy JOHN C. DOBBIN at bottom. Boldly signed by both. Folds with light soiling thereat, a miniscule hole in vignette at bottom, else very good. JAMES L. HENDERSON (1813-1875) was a distinguished naval commander, rising through the ranks to achieve the rank of commodore in the U.S. Navy in 1855. Mathew Perry considered Henderson " of the best officers in the Navy...". He resigned in 1861 to enter the Confederate Navy, commanding batteries at Yorktown and Gloucester Point, as well as the arsenals at Mobile and Selma.
