Sale 38 Lot 573

FRANKLIN PIERCE(1804 - 1869) Fourteenth President of the United States who initiated the Gadsden Purchase, opening up the Northwest for settlement. A superb association piece, his lengthy A.E.S. signed with initials, penned at the conclusion of a letter written to him regarding the expansion of the U. S. Capitol, also signed by Secretary of War and future President of the Confederacy JEFFERSON DAVIS. The letter is from Kentucky Congressman RICHARD H. STANTON (1812 - 1891), 1p. 4to., House of Representatives, June 8, 1854, in part: "...I have been directed by the Select Committee of the House of Representatives on Military Superintendencies over Civil Works to request you to cause to be furnished to said committee at the earliest possible moment copies of the plans of the basement and principal stories of the two wings of the Capitol, as not being erected...". Pierce pens his endorsement on the detached 4to. Sheet, in full: "The Secy of War will please to cause the plans named within to be exhibited to the Committee by Capt. Meigs; and if after such opportunity for examination the comtee desire copies let them be furnished F. P.". Beneath Pierce's endorsement, JEFFERSON DAVIS writes the following directive: "The above direction will be executed by Capt. Meigs - Jefferson Davis, Secy War". Montgomery C. Meigs (1816-1892) supervised the construction of the wings and dome of the future White House from 1853-1859. Light toning to edges, else very good condition, and a fine association piece.
