Sale 38 Lot 1445

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT
(1867-1959) American architect, one of the most influential of all time, he was the creator of so-called organic architecture utilizing novel shapes and incorporating his buildings into their settings. An angry T.L.S. "Frank" with one autograph emendation in pencil, 1p. small 4to., [Taliesin], Feb. 18, 1959 to his attorney concerning bad accounting with the publisher of his 1943 autobiography. In most part: "...I can hardly look upon paying an unsatisfactory publisher who, I am sure, has been cheating me for twenty-five years the (sum of $15,000.00 let's say) to leave my book to me. I won the copyright and the money will come out of me. I am unable to regard such blackmail as a serious business proposition. We will take the matter under further consideration when next in New York. Say in about a fortnight...N.B.. What I wanted to get was a definite accounting on the sales of the book from scratch. On that I expected to act...". With original transmittal envelope. With a retained copy of the attorney's subsequent letter to attorney Charles H. Duell of Feb. 26, 1959, in part: "In connection with my discussions with Mr. Wright...I find myself quite unable to evaluate and reach an opinion at this point...I have absolutely no idea as to the amount of sales of 'An Autobiography' since you published it. I would be obliged...if you would be good enough to have your Bookkeeping Department send me copies of all statements which were rendered to Mr. Wright by you for 'An Autobiography'...". File and staple hose at top, usual folds, else fine condition.
Estimate $ 1,000-1,200
