FITZ JOHN PORTER (1822 - 1901) Union major general who fought at Second Bull Run and Antietam. He was later accused by Pope of "disobedience and disloyalty" and was relieved from command. War-date A.L.S., 1p. 4to. [n.p., n.d., Pennsylvania or Northern Maryland, late June or early July, 1863], in pencil. Porter issues orders to a Gen. Williams, in part: "...The Comdg. General sends you a good guide to aid you to capture a force of secession cavalry at Shamordal Springs which he wishes you to effect. Any force with you he desires you to employ, and is confident that (though directed to be dispatched to Hagerstown tomorrow) any portion of Colonel Irwin's regiment and the Colonel himself will join you with noble hearts in the good cause and be pleased at the opportunity to capture or whip them who are opposed to our country and oppressing our people. The mode of effecting this is left to you...". A few dampstains, else very good.
