FIGHTING THE CONQUISTADORS FOR INDIAN LAND RIGHTS An interesting and rare partly-printed D.S 2pp. legal folio, City of Kings (Lima), Peru, Oct. 7, 1656, in Spanish, a resolution of court case signed by the President and panel of the Royal Audience in Lima on the trial between Capitan Juan Corses de Monroy with the Indians in the Valley of Chincha, over ownership of farmlands. The document also bears the signature of Doctor Diego de Leon Pinelo (author of the Laws of the Indians, a respected lawyer before the Spanish court, Protector General of the Indians as appointed by the Spanish Crown, and author of numerous books of the period which always protected the rights of the Indians in the face of abuse by the Conquistadors. Much of early New World history is based on his writings). It is noted that de Leon Pinelo has studied the case, and gives reason to the Indians of Chincha by saying that their title to these lands has been prior to the Spanish arrival. Expected edge wear and tear, otherwise very good condition.
