ENGLAND AND SCOTLAND ARE UNITED A very rare and historic newspaper, the printing of Queen Anne's proclamation proclaiming a "First Parliament of Great Britain" and including representation in Parliament for the Scots, safeguards for the Presbyterian Church to save the Union Treaty, and permitting the Scots to retain their legal system. This historic event is printed on the very day the two nations were united, May 1, 1707, appearing in the day's newspaper of record, The London Gazette, 4pp. 7 1/2" x 11 1/2", complete, May 1, 1707. Queen Anne's proclamation is printed in full on the left column of the front page, with various letters within praising the Queen for her wisdom. First page is very good, interior pages slightly trimmed at top. On this date, the Scots Parliament and the English Parliament united to form the Parliament of Great Britain, based in the Palace of Westminster in London. On the Acts of Union, historian Simon Schama said "What began as a hostile merger, would end in a full partnership in the most powerful going concern in the world... it was one of the most astonishing transformations in European history".
