Sale 38 Lot 159

EDWARD R. CANBY(1817 - 1873) Union major general who commanded the Department of New Mexico stopping Sibley's assault on California. He later commanded the assault on Mobile and after the war was killed by Modoc Indians. War-date signed endorsement as brigadier general, War Dept., Mar. 25, 1865, approving suggestions made by Provost Marshal Brig. Gen. MARSENA R. PATRICK (1811-1888), provided that they do not conflict with the duties of Treasury Agents as regards captured and abandoned Confederate property. Above Canby's endorsement appears a lengthy signed endorsement by Patrick that comments upon the fact that abandoned clothing: "...Has been greedily seized upon whenever we leave it within the rebel lines, not by citizens only, but for the purpose of being made into forage caps, etc. for the rebel army. It is desirable...that the refuse of our camps be systematically collected...". Toned at margins and along folds, else generally good to very good.
Estimate $ 400-500
