EDWARD MANIGAULT Confederate colonel who headed South Carolina brigades on artillery and infantry. Good content war-date A.L.S., 1p. 4to., "Ordnance Office", Charleston, Oct. 15, 1861 to Maj. J. G. Barnwell, Ordnance & Inspecting Officer of the Dept. of South Carolina. A fine illustration of the unpreparedness of South Carolina for war, in part: "...Your Requisition for (180) cavalry Pistols and (5000) Friction Tubes has been received...there are no pistols on hand; the last having been issued to Colonel Martin's Mounted Regiment, which moreover could not be supplied in full, the Requisitions exceeding by (221) the number on hand. The order for the 5000 Friction Tubes was given on the Citadel...". Fine.
