In part: "...A little town not containing three thousand inhabitants...incapable of cultivation...the population stagnate into a mere vegetable existence...enterprize of all kinds is at a complete lines of vessels, and even a yearly steamer is an astonishment. An occasional schooner brings the necessaries of the famishing population...Did you ever meet a more indolent people than those of a warm climate?...They originally were a servile race to the Spaniards here...There is much beauty amongst the ladies of this place...I am an acceptable beau with them...".
