DWIGHT EISENHOWER AND BERNARD LAW MONTGOMERY
An extraordinary war-date A.D.S. on a lightly-lined sheet of note paper, 3" x 5", written and signed by Supreme Allied Commander and future president DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER and signed at the top by British general BERNARD LAW MONTGOMERY. In full: "Agreement entered into, Oct. 11, 1943, between Generals Eisenhower & Montgomery Amount [Pounds] 5 - General E bets war with Germany will end before Xmas 1944. Local Time. Eisenhower signs "Dwight D. Eisenhower at bottom, while Montgomery adds his signature and rank "B. L. Montgomery General" at top. Tipped at top to a white cardboard backing, beneath a candid photo of Ike and Monty at ease and sharing a happy moment . Very slight glue show-through at top of note, else very good. At the time of this wager, British and American forces were making steady gains on the Italian peninsula and the next day they would attack along the Volturno Front. Two days later, Badoglio's Italian government would declare war on Germany. Meanwhile, the Russians were continuing their destruction of the retreating German forces. Of course, Ike would lose his five pounds: Christmas, 1944 saw Americans surrounded at Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, with relief just starting to come from the west in the form of Patton's 3rd Army . A superb association in a unique item! From the estate of the recipient, Col. Ernest "Tex" Lee, who served throughout the war as Eisenhower's Executive Officer and Aide de Camp. Lee joined Ike in June, 1941 and assisted in the planning of the invasion at Normandy and the ultimate defeat of Germany.
