DABNEY H. MAURY(1822 - 1900) Confederate major general who fought at Pea Ridge and later served with the Army of the West at Iuka and Corinth. A. L. S. "Dabney H. Maury" 2pp. 8vo., in ink, Richmond, Va., Oct. 1, 1876, to Andrew Johnston recommending former Confederate general William R. Boggs to a professorship at present-day Virginia Polytechnic Institute. In part: "...I thank you for an opportunity of serving my friend Gen'l. [William R.] Boggs. I knew him well at West Point where he graduated with unusual distinction...during the war he was chief of staff of Gen'l. Kirby Smith...he was at one time superintendent or chief engineer of the Opelousas Rail Road...he is one of the brightest men and best educated I ever knew in the army...he will be...very the corps of professors of any college which him...". Boldly penned and very good to fine.
