CONQUISTADORS OF PERU A superb association with fascinating content, D.S., 2pp., folio, Arequipa, April 26, 1567, in Spanish, concerning legal representation before FRANCISCO DE TOLEDO, the newly installed Viceroy of Peru. After Pizarro and his conquistadors fully vanquished the indigenous Incan tribal government in 1534, they set up a system for profiting from the work of indigenous Incan peasants, much like a feudal lordship in Europe, transforming the conquistadors into encomenderos. Seeing the profits to be made, King Philip II of Spain established in 1569 a viceroyalty to tax the encomenderos, to be headed by Toledo (also headed the Peruvian Inquisition). This document, boldly signed by conquistadors Francisco Boso, Alonso Luque, Martin Lopez de Carbajal, Diego Bravo, Diego de Herrera, Juan de la Torre, Hernando de Almonte, Pedro de Mendia and Cristobal de Cardenas, gives their powers to Royal Lawyer Juan Sanchez de Aguirre, Antonio de Segovia and Salvador Martin for representation in front of Toledo over the disputed taxes. Moderate edge wear, uneven toning slightly affecting signatures, else fine.
Estimate $ 300-400
