CONFEDERATE P.O.W. WRITES A FELLOW P.O.W. An incredible Confederate P.O.W. to P.O.W. letter with integral address leaf (apparently hand-carried), 1p. 8vo., Camp Morton, In., Aug. 7, 1864 in which in which W. M. Maberry [?] writes to an officer of his regiment, Capt. A. R. Gordon, incarcerated at Johnson's Island near Sandusky, Ohio. In part: "...I rec'd yours, in due time, and would have replied sooner...[but] not being allowed to write but one [letter] per day, I was compelled to take them by turn. My health is improved considerable of late but not entirely good. No news of importance from the old country...People are living well...Some talk of exchange of prisoners here in camp...I have been here 12 mo. today and if ever a poor devil was sick and tired of a place I certainly am of this...Write me if any or how many of the officers from the old 3rd are with you. I am in hopes we may all meet soon in dixie, the land of Rebeldom. The land I love...". Very good. The first suck prisoner to prisoner letter from either side we have ever encountered.
Estimate $ 400-600
