Sale 38 Lot 1529

COMPOSERS PHOTOGRAPHSFine lot of three cabinet photographs, includes: Charles Gounod, an excellent bust portrait c. 1880's, no backstamp, however, this is the same image that appears in the History of Opera, credited to Saxony of England. Along with Guiseppi Verdi, a half-length image, c.1870's, at the height of his career. Though no back-stamp or photographers identification is present, the image is easily dated because a steel engraving of this image graced the cover of La Scala for the premier of Aida! Image is in fine condition, mount is lightly toned. Finally, George Frederick Handel, a detailed portrait painting image on oversize mount, c.1880's, photographed by Frederick Bruckmann. Image is clean with a minimum of yellowing, while the mount has creases at the corners and slight uneven toning. Also included in this lot: Charles Santley , ranked as the leading operatic baritone of his day (1860's), a scarce cabinet photograph, bust image of Santley, c. 1870's. Light soiling to image and mount, otherwise very good. Four pieces.
Estimate $ 200-300
