CLIMBING PIKES PEAK IN 1873Great content A.L.S. from "J. B. McClure" who climbed to the summit of Pikes Peak in 1873, 6pp., 8vo., Colorado Springs, July 17, 1873, written to his father Hon. J.E. McClure, with the original postal cover with vintage 3 cent stamp. In part: "...Sorry to learn that Ma is not feeling any better. I know a trip out here would do her so much good...On the 10th...myself with a party of ten others started on horseback to the top of Pikes Peak, which is 14,300 feet above the level of the sea. We kept climbing mountain after mountain until eight o'clock when we arrived at the edge of the timber line...there we made a large fire...fastened our horses...then rolled ourselves up in blankets and tried to go to sleep, but none of us succeeded on account of it being so cold...At 1:30 am we started on foot (leaving our horses and blankets) for a climb of about 3000 feet nearer to the top at an average angle of about 45 degrees and we arrived there at 4:20 am, in time to see the sunrise...From there we could see about 100 miles in each direction...". Cover torn at right edge, the letter in fine condition.
