Sale 38 Lot 451

CHILD'S SLAVE COLLAR Extremely rare hand-forged slave collar, ca. 1840's, approximately 14" in length and used on a child on a plantation. Made of chain links with an ornamental brass and iron neck plate and locking device. Slave dealers placed a premium on child and teen-aged enslaved Africans. Although various shackles for adult slaves are commonly seen, those used on children are seldom offered. De-accessioned from the Slave Relics Museum in Walterboro, South Carolina and accompanied by a letter confirming the sale and describing the item. Lightly rusted and lacking the key, otherwise intact. With museum de-accession letter of provenance.
Estimate $ 1,000-1,200
