Sale 38 Lot 1061

CHESTER W. NIMITZ (1885 - 1966) American admiral, Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War II and largely responsible for the successful "island-hopping" campaign against the Japanese. I.S.P. 14" x 11 1/2" b/w, a fine view of Nimitz seated at a table upon the deck of the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on Sep. 2, 1945 as he signs the Japanese Instrument of Surrender. At bottom he inscribed the photograph to noted oceanographer William Ewing: "To Bill Ewing - Good friend of many years - who - as much as many of us in uniform - made significant contributions to our war effort in the Pacific in WW II - and thereby helped to make possible the above scene. C. W. Nimitz, Fleet Admiral, USN". Condition issues include a 2" vertical tear from bottom margin crossing signature and a similar tear at upper-right, both of which have had cellophane tape applied to the recto, multiple marginal creases which largely do not intrude on image: worthy or restoration and estimated accordingly.
Estimate $ 700-900
