CHESTER A. ARTHUR (1829 - 1886) Twenty-first President of the United States who took office following the assassination of James Garfield. Superb association L.S. 1p. 4to., New York, Aug. 13, 1885, on letterhead of the Grant Monument Association letterhead to Richard T. Greener, the first African American graduate of Harvard University, and secretary of the Grant Monument Association. In part: "...You will please call a meeting of the General Committee for the Association, Thursday, August 20, transact such business as may come before the General Committee...for erecting the proposed monument to General U. S. Grant...". Richard T. Greener (1844 - 1922), was an educator and diplomat. A lover of art, he vetoed early plans for the Grant Monument as "unworthy designs", until the John Hemenway Duncan proposal, which he thought fit as "presenting the characteristics of the Conqueror of the Rebellion...". Now commonly called Grant's Tomb, the Grant Memorial was completed in 1897, and is the largest tomb in the United States. It houses the remains of both Grant and his wife Julia Dent Grant. Boldly signed by the former President, with three autograph emendations. Mounted, very good condition.
