CHARLES WILLSON PEALE(1741 - 1827) American artist, a portraitist whose Portrait Gallery of the Heroes of the Revolution was the first art gallery in the United States (1782), created the Peale Museum of Natural History, and founded a family of painters. Fine association manuscript D.S. "C. W. Peale" with the body of the document in the hand of JARED INGERSOLL, 1p. 4to., [n.p., likely Philadelphia], Mar. 20, 1797, a legal document in which it is agreed that the case of Sidney and James Hutchinson (Ingersoll acting as Administrator for James) vs. Peale be placed on the docket for trial. Boldly signed by Peale at bottom, also signed by Ingersoll as Plaintiff. Jared Ingersoll (1749-1822) was a Signer of the Constitution, a member of the Continental Congress and legally involved in the determination of the constitutionality of an Act of Congress. Ingersoll would later defend Peale's attempts to make his museum a municipal institution, and in 1820 would make a gift of his portrait of Ingersoll to the lawyer's family.
