Sale 38 Lot 613

(1840-1882) American lawyer who assassinated James Garfield on July 2, 1881 over his disappointment in not obtaining public office. Scarce S.P. 4 1/2" x 6 1/2" sepia, a C. M. Bell chest, up portrait of Guiteau looking over his left shoulder, signed in the lower margin in black ink. On the verso the photographer notes: "The negative from which this photograph is taken was made personally by me in the jail in the city of Washington on February 6, 1882, for Charles Guiteau, and I warn all persons not to infringe upon the copyright". Very good. Even after his sentencing, Guiteau continued to profit from his crime, selling the suit he wore when he shot the president for $100 and autographed items for $9.00/dozen.
Estimate $ 1,000-1,200
