Sale 38 Lot 1338

(1812 - 1870) English novelist and the author of such classics as Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities, and David Copperfield. Rare, fine association sheet of a heavily corrected manuscript, Dickens' short essay, 'Lying Awake,' in Dickens' hand, 1p. 4 1/2" x 4", mentioning his friend, fellow author Washington Irving. In part: "...Washington Irving in his tales of a traveller. But it happened to me the other night...not with eyes half closed, but with eyes wide open, not with my nightcap drawn down to my nose...but with my hair...all over the pillow; not just falling asleep...broad awake...and no scientific investigation [?] or...the theory of the subject of the brain [?], and one part of my brain unwakeful...". The content and number of corrections makes it obvious this is a section of a manuscript, versus a partial letter. Ragged top edge, else very good. Worthy of further research.
Estimate $ 4,000-5,000
