Sale 38 Lot 1419

CHARLES DANA GIBSON(1867 - 1944) American illustration artist who created the "Gibson Girl" for Colliers magazine. Later, he bought Life magazine and worked as the magazine's editor until the 1930's. A fine and unusual item, a printed menu with original drawing within its folded pages. The menu is for a farewell dinner for the famed illustrator held at The Aldine, [New York], Oct. 17, 1893, bearing an imprinted illustrated cover featuring a weeping "Gibson Girl" standing on a dock as a ship sails away. On the pages within, Gibson has drawn a small pencil study of a Gibson Girl and inscribed it: "To Dan from his friend C. D. Gibson". With an additional signature on the opposite page, and bearing three other original drawings. The menu is copiously signed by other notable American authors and artists of the day, including: DAN BEARD, ROBERT BRIDGES, RICHARD HARDING DAVIS, R. W. GILER, and W. S. RANSFORD, all in pencil. Light chipping to edges and very light age-toning and a couple of negligible foxed spots, otherwise very good condition.
Estimate $ 400-500
