CAMP LETTERMAN CLOSURE DOCUMENT A great war-date partly-printed Union medical document, 1p. folio: "Invoice of Medicines, Instruments, Hospital Stores, Bedding...turned over to Surgeon C. C. Cox...Medical Purveyor, Baltimore, Md., by Surgeon Henry Janes U. S. A. Gettysburg, Pa.", December 21, 1863. Following Gettysburg, Camp Letterman served as the main hospital at which all the Gettysburg casualties were treated. By mid- November 1863, all of the hospital's patients were removed in order to accommodate the dedication of the battlefield's National Cemetery. The hospital's break up was not completed until well into December, and its good were returned to the government. Camp Letterman Medical Director Surgeon Henry Janes provides here a detailed list of all items that were used and returned from one of the Civil War's most famous hospitals. Hundreds of medical related items are listed while the appropriate items returned are noted with the exact number returned to the government given. The medical stores are broken down into categories and appear as follows, in very small part: "Materia Medica...Acaciae pulvis, in 1/2 lb bottles oz. 96...Ammoniae liquor, in 1/2 lb. G. s. bottles oz. 20...linum, in tins lbs. 100...Hospital Stores...ginger, powdered lbs. 19...arrow root lbs 170...Instruments...cupping glasses no. 7...syringe, penis, glass, in cases no. 34...tourniquets, field (13 worthless) no. 56...amputating case, good no. 1...Bedding...bed sacks, worn, no. 888...mosquito bars, worn no. 40...pillow cases, cotton, worn no. 2,124...Furniture And Appliances...bed pans...(46 broken) worn no. 112...feeding cups...(15 broken) no. 26...lanterns, glass worn & broken no. 65...". Many more items of interest are listed and this lot is a treasure trove of reference for students of 19th century medical history. Unsigned, but from the personal archive of Surgeon Henry Janes. Fine.
