BOOKER T. WASHINGTON(1856-1915) Black American educator born a slave, established and headed Tuskegee Institute to provide practical training to blacks. Nice content T.L.S. "Booker T. Washington" on Tuskegee Normal & Industrial Institute letterhead, 1p. 4to., Grand Union Hotel, New York, Dec. 12, 1899 to Rev. George L. Chaney. Washington mentions that a "lady in the West" had made an unconditional donation of $25,000 (an enormous sum at the time), and that since his event at Madison Square Garden, over $82,000 had been raised. Folds, typing just very slightly faded, else very good.
