BOOK SIGNED BY THE BLACK CHAPLAIN OF THE 54TH MASS. REGIMENT An exceptionally rare book signed by the Chaplain of the famed 54th Mass. Regiment, SAMUEL HARRISON (1818 - ?). Harrison, a black Congregationalist minister residing in Pittsfield, urged young blacks to enlist in Robert Gould Shaw's regiment in early 1863. Following the disastrous July 18 attack on Fort Wagner, Mass. Gov. John A. Andrew dispatched Harrison to be his emissary to the brave members of the regiment and on his arrival, he learned he had been elected chaplain. The book offered here is Harrison's copy of Philosophy of the Plan of Salvation, by Calvin E Stowe, D.D. Salem: John P. Jewett & Co. 1845. The flyleaf is signed in pencil: "Samuel Harrison's Book". A few pages are foxed, including signed page, which barely detracts, else very good condition. Interestingly, Harrison was refused pay due to his race Gov. Andrew intervened using Harrison as a test case for all black soldiers, and on Apr. 23, 1864 Attorney Gen. Edward Bates rendered the opinion that regardless of race, all soldiers are entitled to their full pay.
Estimate $ 1,000-1,500
