BIRMINGHAM MARCHERS POSTER Scarce printed broadside, folio (15x20 in.) [n.d., c. 1963] entitled "TO THE NEGROES OF BIRMINGHAM you do us proud!" printed by the Birmingham Message in New York on behalf of Martin Luther King. The text reads, in part: "...Lincoln said 101 years ago: 'We, even we here, have the power to nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope on earth.' This speaks to our day too... So said yesterday's Irish, fighting bitterly for freedom over generations. So say today's Israelis, surrounded, like you, by antagonists who can only see backwards. But all such have had to fight for their freedom... with bullets. You fight, even more heroically without them... ". At bottom is space for signatures offering support of the message, together with instructions: "WHAT YOU CAN DO: No fight for freedom can be won by money alone. It is always costly however, and money helps. If you want to contribute, send it directly to Dr. Martin Luther King, 334 Auburn Street N.E. Atlanta, Georgia...". Extremely scarce and possibly never issued. The text bears a pen mark crossing out two lines of the text: "You are among the bravest and best of all Americans" which was possibly done in a stage of editing and would suggest this is a draft. Usual folds, top margin ever so slightly rough, else fine condition.
Estimate $ 200-300
