BENJAMIN WEST(1738 - 1820) American painter who gained fame by his historical paintings, a charter member of the Royal Academy and one of the founding fathers of American art. A.N.S. "Benj. West" on a correspondence card, 1p. 12mo., London, Dec. 15, 1815, an introduction for two gentlemen "......desirous of seeing the pictures in the room Pall Mall. Should Mr. Smart not be there you will show the pictures to them......". On verso, West has written the names of the two men: "Thomas F. Gorringe" and "James Thorn". Mounting traces to verso, otherwise boldly penned and very good.
