ANDREW JOHNSON IS A DRUNK! Fine pair of political content A.L.S.'s, 6pp. 4to., Alton, Tn., Sept. 17 and Oct. 8, 1866, in part: "...Andy Johnson is played out in this country, and you can rely upon the great [?] states rolling such a majority for John A. Logan and against Copperheads and Rebels, as will make A. Johnson tremble in his boots...his tour from Washington to St. Louis enabled us all to see him and hear him and it sickened us all, that journey cost him millions of honest votes. His speech, his drunken driveling, slobbering harangue at the Southern Hotel at St. Louis was the straw that broke the camel's back, it was the most disgusting tirade...He was drunk, drunk! He openly endorsed...the New Orleans Massacre...A. Johnson passed through here last week...on to St. Louis where he had another 'big drunk'...". Very good. Johnson had been a heavy drinker for many years. On inauguration day Johnson was drunk while he made his speech to Congress. After making several inappropriate comments Hannibal Hamlin, the former Vice President had to intervene and help him back to his seat. After the inauguration, one of the senators, Zachariah Chandler, wrote to his wife that Johnson "was too drunk to perform his duties and disgraced himself and the Senate by making a drunken foolish speech".
