Sale 38 Lot 355

AN EXCESSIVELY RARE CONFEDERATE P.O.W. COVER An excessively rare postal cover, likely the only one of its kind, a cover for a letter sent to Union prisoner Lt. George Kies of the 18th Ct. Infy. while he was held in Charleston at either Roper Hospital or "The Workhouse". Roper Hospital was not used to treat ill or wounded prisoners, but rather held Union officers who had signed their paroles. Prisoners were held at Roper briefly while awaiting transfer to the parole camp in Columbia. Kies may also have been held at The Workhouse, near the City Jail. This facility also held officers, largely those who had yet to submit their paroles. The examiner of our cover is Lt. Hugh Hamilton Rogers who was working for the Provost Marshal in Charleston. This is the only known cover extant ever sent to Roper Hospital or The Workhouse. It bears a clean, easily-repaired tear from the left margin to the end of the word "Care", and a small tear from top into the recipient's first name, but is otherwise very good.
Estimate $ 600-800
