ALFRED H. COLQUITT(1824 - 1894) Confederate brigadier general who was at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Petersburg. A.D.S. "Alfred Colquitt, Governor" on Executive Department letterhead, 1p., folio, Atlanta, Oct. 21, 1882. Written in reference to monies owed Robert Toombs, a fellow Georgian and Confederate [Secretary of the Confederacy]. It reads, in part: "...Ordered, that the Attorney General pay Robert Toombs, out of money in his hands belonging to the State, ten per cent of the amount paid by the Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line R.R. Company...". Toombs hid from Union troops in Cuba at the Civil War's end and refused both a pardon and the oath of allegiance upon returning in 1867, choosing to remain an "unreconstructed" Southerner. Moderate creasing, uneven toning, else very good.
