ALBERTO VARGAS (1896 - 1982) American artist, a painter of pin-ups and erotica, famous for his iconic ca. 1940s images of girls for Esquire Magazine. Fine content A.L.S. "Alberto" and "Vargas" in the text 2pp. 4to., [n.p., n.d. but likely 1978, the year of his prolific return to art, to "Bill", in part: "...We artists are trying as hard as we can to carve our way to the top of the mountain, come hell or high water. The trouble is that there are too many big names, already clogging the road ahead of you. In my case, the year 1917 for example, there were: Leyendecker, Harrison Fisher etc...This corps d'elite raised an iron curtain of dust so thick that...I thought I had better drop out and become a musician. It was there that I realized that everyone of them had to begin sometime, from the bottom up...". Vargas then continues with solid advice to his friend, in part: "...Please yourself first...remember, your critics don't know the difference between a square and a circle! As for the subjects, Girls ah! Is there anything more delightful than our American girls? On T.V., they shine like golden angels, and sell you anything...You should have seen the one I was lucky to marry...With her at my side I stormed the top of the mountain, where there is only room for only, the numero uno!...". Torn from a lined notepaper, very good.
