Sale 38 Lot 1031

A.L.S. as an Allied Prisoner of War, 1p., folio, Nuremberg Justice Palace, [1946], in pencil in German to his wife, Paulina. Not translated, but an interesting letter on official Allied Prisoner of War letterhead in which Kesselring makes two references to Dachau and notes that other arrested Nazis had not written to him; however, the majority of the letter ranges from the mundane: "...still no news, expect good consideration...", to the nonsensical: "...Christ spoke of Dachau...", which may have possibly been code to pass the censors viewing all prisoner correspondence. Indeed, Kesselring writes uncharacteristically in neat, capitalized pencil, doubtless at the order of his keepers. The document is stamped with blue ink and initialed in red pencil, "Censored & Passed by IMT". Interestingly, Kesselring has signed with his Nazi rank where the document indicates placement of address: "FELDMARSCHALL ALBERT KESSELRING, INTERNAL SECURITY DETACHMENT, JUSTIZPALAST, NURNBERG". As Kesselring's trial took place in Venice, this address indicates that Kesselring writes at the trial of Hermann Goring, where Kesselring testified. Slightly chipped along right edge, with slight staining along moderate folds, else very good .
