ADJUSTING THE PAY FOR GETTYSBURG SURGEON A good war-date Camp Letterman related Gettysburg letter, 2pp. 4to., in ink by Medical Director William S. King, on Headquarters Department of the Susquehanna letterhead, Chambersburg, Pa., August 26, 1863 to Camp Letterman Director Henry Janes concerning the adjustment of pay for contract surgeons at Gettysburg, and making contracts to avoid the draft. In part: "...The contracts with Drs. Horner & Huber made by me were returned disapproved at $113.83 per month because it was not for field service...the compensation [was] fixed by the Surgeon General himself...the service at Gettysburg [?] as much of the character of field service as ordinarily devolved upon contract physicians...the auditing officers of the treasury will pass the accounts unless it appears that the service were performed with troops in the field...I can make no decision in the matter and have thought perhaps it would be better for the contracts to be $100 per month...your...referring to a desire of Dr. Wynkoop to make a contract service again [to avoid the draft]...the Provost Marshall Gen'l has decided that contract physicians are not exempt from the draft...". From the personal archive Surgeon Henry Janes. Light soiling, else very good.
Estimate $ 400-500
