ABRAHAM LINCOLNFine partly-printed D.S. "Abraham Lincoln" as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, Feb. 27, 1862, an appointment of Robert H. K. Whitely to serve as "Major in the Ordnance Department". Cosigned by Secretary of War EDWIN M. STANTON. Fine condition, both signatures bold and strong, folds present but clean; a much finer document than is usually seen. Matted and framed. Robert H. K. Whitely (1809-1896), a West Point graduate, was brevetted captain for his gallantry during his service in the Seminole Wars. Whitely, whose duties included command of the government arsenal at Governors Island in New York, would do well for himself: he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on June 1, 1863, and to colonel and brigadier general by brevet on Mar. 13, 1865. Not examined out of frame.
Estimate $ 5,000-6,000
