Sale 38 Lot 530

19TH CENTURY RELICS An interesting item crafted by an anonymous nineteenth-century fabric collector, 1p, 4to, [n.p.], 1878, being a compilation of five separate fabric swaths glued vertically down the left side of a single sheet, each bearing an inscription in fine, penciled script. The collection purports to include, "Fine Linen of Egypt- from a mummy 3000 years old", a small section of white curtain, "from the East Room of the President's House", velvet from an armchair in Scotland's Holyrood Palace, tapestry from Mary Queen of Scots anteroom, and a piece of leather from a Queen Mary chair. The backing sheet itself has some moderate yellowing, foxing, and a crease running down the left side; the fabrics have remained remarkably intact. A curious, quirky, and altogether interesting example of nineteenth-century travel and hobbies.
